Voting in Washington
General election: Tuesday, November 3, 2026.
At a glance
Many people are registered automatically when they deal with the DMV or certain state agencies. You can register and vote on the same day, including Election Day.
Show photo ID or other ID when voting in person (most vote by mail with signature check); without it, vote a provisional ballot counted if your signature matches. No ID? Ask your election office whether it offers a free one for voting. First-time voters who registered by mail may need to show ID under federal law.
Ballot mailed automatically to every registered voter; no request needed Return deadline: postmarked by Election Day and received by Nov 23 (day before county certification on Nov 24).
Voting centers Oct 16 - 8 p.m. Nov 3 (18 days before)
Since 2022 only people currently in prison for a felony lose the vote; restored automatically on release.

Where the road gets harder
Every rule is a cost, and it doesn't fall on everyone the same. A deadline, a document or a trip to an office is easy for some people and a real obstacle for others: people who work hourly jobs, move often, live far from an office, don't drive, or have a disability. Here is what that looks like in Washington.
- No extra hurdles beyond the basics stood out in our check. Register early anyway, and confirm your registration before Election Day.
