Voting in Iowa
General election: Tuesday, November 3, 2026.
At a glance
You can register and vote on the same day, including Election Day.
Show an Iowa license/ID, passport, military/veteran ID, tribal ID or the free Voter ID card mailed to registrants without a license; without one, vote a provisional ballot and show ID by noon the Monday after the election. No ID? Ask your election office whether it offers a free one for voting. First-time voters who registered by mail may need to show ID under federal law.
Return deadline: received by close of polls 8 p.m. Nov 3.
Oct 14 - Nov 2 (in-person absentee, 20 days before)
Under Gov. Reynolds' 2020 executive order rights are restored automatically after completing the sentence, except for homicide offenses, which require an application to the governor.

Where the road gets harder
Every rule is a cost, and it doesn't fall on everyone the same. A deadline, a document or a trip to an office is easy for some people and a real obstacle for others: people who work hourly jobs, move often, live far from an office, don't drive, or have a disability. Here is what that looks like in Iowa.
- Registration isn't automatic. Each person has to sign up on their own, which leaves out people who don't know the rules or move often.
- Without an accepted ID, your ballot is provisional. It only counts if you make a second trip to an election office with ID, within a few days and during office hours.
- Mail ballots have to arrive by Election Day; a postmark isn't enough. A ballot mailed in the last days can arrive too late and won't count, so return it in person if it's close.
- After a felony conviction: Under Gov. Reynolds' 2020 executive order rights are restored automatically after completing the sentence, except for homicide offenses, which require an application to the governor.
- The Sentencing Project estimated in 2024 that 26,878 people in Iowa (1.13% of the voting-eligible population, and 8.67% of Black voting-eligible residents) could not vote because of a felony conviction.Source: The Sentencing Project, Locked Out 2024
- A 2021 Iowa law shortened early voting from 29 days to 20, moved Election Day poll closing from 9 p.m. to 8 p.m., and requires most mail ballots to arrive by Election Day.Source: Associated Press via PBS NewsHour
