Justices on the retention ballot
Justices of California's Supreme Court and Courts of Appeal don't run against opponents. Voters decide whether each one is elected to a new term (yes or no).
What each court does
- Supreme Court: The state's highest court, with seven justices. It has the final word on what California law and the state constitution mean. - Court of Appeal: The middle level of California's courts, in six districts. Its justices hear appeals from the trial (superior) courts, and its rulings can be reviewed by the Supreme Court.
