What this job does: One of five councilors who share authority with the governor over running the state. The council reviews and approves most state spending, confirms appointments such as judges and commissioners, hears pardon requests, and oversees the state's 10-year highway plan. Each councilor represents about one fifth of the people; they are elected every two years.
