Ballot Measures
Every Idaho voter decides these 4. Each page explains what a yes or no vote does and links to the official pamphlet. HJR 6 wording is copied word for word from the Voter Pamphlet (partly checked, see its page). The official ballot titles of HJR 4, Proposition 1 and the advisory question are NOT yet checked word for word (INCOMPLETE).
- HJR 4: Who can legalize drugs Only the Legislature could legalize marijuana and other drugsmajority to pass
Biggest change: Gives the Legislature sole power to legalize marijuana, narcotics or other psychoactive substances, which would block citizen initiatives on the subject.
- HJR 6: English as the official language English as Idaho's official language, in the constitutionmajority to pass
Biggest change: Makes English the official language in the state constitution; official proceedings and documents would be in English except where federal law requires otherwise (pamphlet explanatory statement, read as a summary).
- Proposition 1: Abortion rights Right to abortion before viabilitymajority to pass
Biggest change: Creates a right to abortion before fetal viability; after viability no general right "except in cases of 'medical emergency'" (pamphlet long title, read as a summary).
- Advisory question: Idaho State Gun Pick an official state gun (advisory only)nonbinding advisory vote
Biggest change: Non-binding: "the Legislature would have to take action during a future legislative session to officially designate a gun as the Idaho State Gun.".
Two constitutional amendments (HJR 4 and HJR 6) were put on the ballot by the Legislature. Proposition One is a citizen initiative. The state gun question is advisory only.
