Douglas County 201How a five-member commission would be elected
In plain words
- Not a yes/no question: voters choose between two models. It takes effect only if Question 200 passes.
- Option 1: all five commissioners live in and are elected by their own districts.
- Option 2: three commissioners elected by district and two elected countywide (at-large).
- If more than one election-method measure passes (including 1A), the one with the most votes prevails where they conflict, under state law as described by Axios and Colorado Politics.
Our summary of the official materials and local reporting.
What your vote means
Votes for one of the two district-based models (the option with more votes wins as between the two).
Votes for neither option; if 200 passes and no method wins, the election method would follow whichever measure is effective (the county says courts will likely resolve conflicts).
Our plain-words summary.
Why people want it, and why others object
Why supporters want it
- Supporters of district-based seats say countywide voting leaves smaller municipalities underrepresented and district commissioners would be more accountable to their communities (Colorado Politics). source: coloradopolitics.com
Why opponents object
- Opponents say all voters should be able to vote for every commissioner because every commissioner affects all residents (Colorado Politics). source: coloradopolitics.com
