Every race, every candidate

178 candidates from the Secretary of State's official candidate list, each with a profile page. Candidates for U.S. Senate, U.S. House, the seven other statewide offices, all 35 State Senate districts and all State House districts are from the Secretary of State's official candidate list (all 745 rows, saved October 15, 2026). Candidates marked withdrawn on the list are left out. County, city and other local races on that list are not in this guide. Official amendment wording is not shown yet: it has not been checked word for word. Your sample ballot is the final word. The registration deadline, absentee ballot dates and poll hours are not shown because we have not checked them against the official calendar. Whether a judge retention question is on the ballot has not been checked. County and local races are on your sample ballot.

Statewide offices

Statewide, South Dakota voters choose a governor and lieutenant governor (as one ticket), a U.S. senator, the U.S. representative for the whole state, attorney general, secretary of state, state auditor, state treasurer, commissioner of school and public lands, and a public utilities commissioner. Four constitutional amendments are also on the ballot. The official candidate list has no judge rows, so we do not know whether a judge retention question is on your ballot. Check your sample ballot.

U.S. House

South Dakota's one vote in the U.S. House, chosen by the whole state. House members write and vote on federal laws, taxes and spending, and every bill to raise taxes has to start in the House. A term is two years.

State Senate

All 35 State Senate districts are listed from the Secretary of State's official candidate list. Several races have one candidate; the list shows every candidate it gives for the district. Candidates marked withdrawn on the list are left out.

State House

All 35 State House districts are listed from the Secretary of State's official candidate list. Each district elects two representatives (Districts 26 and 28 are split into seats A and B, one representative each). Candidates marked withdrawn on the list are left out. Check your sample ballot.
